You may have many questions about being a custom home owner. Here are a few of the more frequently asked questions for you to get to know us and the services we provide. When you choose to invest in a home, you are also choosing to invest in your builder. A relationship between you and your builder is developed as the home is built. We want you to be comfortable in allowing us to build your new home. The best way for us to accomplish this is to tell you about us and what we stand for.

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Michael Allen Monk, husband of Kelly Monk and father to four children. I graduated from Auburn University in 1995 in mechanical engineering and received an MBA from the University of Alabama in 1998. I grew up around construction and apprenticed with an upper-end custom home builder in Birmingham for three years.

Kelly and I formed Michael Allen Homes in 2001. Since the beginning, our main focus is making sure your experience with building a new home is an enjoyable one, and that you are genuinely happy with all aspects of the finished product.

Why do we build?

Simply put, we are good at it and enjoy what we do. I believe there are many things we could each do but only a few things we are well suited for. Building homes is what we know, and pleasing our clients day in and day out is what drives us. The blessings we have received over the last decade are confirmation we are doing the right thing.

Why choose us to build your new home?

I am certain there are many fine builders in the area who could build you a nice home. Many of them are my peers and I value their friendships. I strongly believe, however, we offer the greatest value as it relates to your new home. We place a high emphasis on maintaining an unsurpassable level of style and quality. We work with our suppliers and sub-contractors to keep costs in line, and we value our relationship with you the client. I am thankful for the relationships we have developed and maintained with past clients.

What do I do if I am interested in exploring the possibility of having a new home built?

Give us a call or email us. We’re here to guide you through the entire process from deciding on a location and selecting a plan, to lining up financing and addressing closing concerns. We will answer your questions to the best of our ability, and if we don’t know the answer we’ll find it out for you. Our desire is that you would allow us to build your special home.

Do you have lots you only build on or can you build on a lot I already own?

Both. We own lots in subdivisions that act as “inventory” for potential clients, and we contract to build homes for people on lots they either currently own or are planning to purchase. We can also work with you to locate a lot that meets your specific needs in a location you desire.

Do you have specific plans you build or can I provide my own plans?

There are a number of different routes we can take to obtain the perfect plan for you and your lot. We have house plans that we‘ve built before, that you are welcome to look through and choose from. We can suggest online websites for you to browse through in your search for plans. We can modify plans, in-house, in order to tweak the plans to your needs. And finally, we have working relationships with several architects and home plan designers who can work with you to design and draw a set of plans custom tailored to you and your needs.

How is the financing handled?

We have developed excellent relationships with several local lenders and mortgage companies. Depending on the situation, we can handle the construction financing on our end and have a traditional closing at the end of the project, or we can set you up with a local lender to create a construction loan that is just right for you.

How long does it take to build a home?

That’s always a tough question to answer as many factors need to be taken into consideration. As a rule of thumb however, a 3,500 sqft house built on a conventional foundation, takes about 6 to 7 months to complete.

How do you communicate with our clients?

We pride ourselves on having clear communication with our clients so you know what to expect every step of the way. Michael will take the time to understand your goals and vision, and guide you through the entire building process with careful explanation. We value and respect the trust you have placed in us to build your new home and are committed to making the building process simple and easy with no surprises along the way.

Do you provide a Builders Warranty?

Yes, we provide a standard 1 year Builders Warranty and many or our materials come with their own extended warranties as well.

Can I see one of your homes?

We generally have several homes in various stages of construction at any given time. We would be glad to walk you through them answering questions along the way. In addition, many or our clients, have offered for us to show their personal homes, allowing you to see the finished product in a lived in capacity.

Do you provide help with making selections?

We will be glad to help in this area. Our vendors have experience aiding in the selection process, helping you to pick the materials, finishes, & colors appropriate for your home, and in keeping with your specific taste. We’ve also developed a great working relationship with a local interior design company who has assisted many of our clients in the selection process for their homes. If you already have a designer you are currently working with, we will be glad to coordinate with him / her as well.
